Ordinarily, emergence means coming forth, coming into view. In systems theory, it has a more technical meaning: the arising of new patterns and properties during a process of self-organization. I like the fact that emergence is inherently beyond prediction. How does randomness give rise to order? How does the interaction between part and whole relate to beauty? In my painting I want the images that emerge to speak for themselves.
